Jesus is Lord - TRUE GREATNESS

Contributed by: Liza Faunillan
See Verses; John 1:6-9, John 3:30, Matthew 11:11

When John the Baptist did his ministry on earth, he did not do it to be great in the sight of men. He admitted he was the one the Prophet Isaiah talked about as the “voice calling out in the desert..” but he denied being the Christ. He denied greatness and looked at himself as not even worthy to untie the sandals of Jesus.

More so, John guided the people away from himself and pointed them to Jesus saying “Look! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! This is the One I meant when I said, ‘ A man who comes after me has surpassed me because he was before me.” John told the people he was only a messenger, a herald to prepare the people for the coming of the Messiah, the true great one.

When it was time for Jesus to come out and minister to the people, John declared, “ He (Jesus) must increase, and I must decrease.” John’s time of ministry was short in the eyes of men, and yet Jesus commended him before His disciples saying, “…Among those born of women there has not risen anyone greater than John the Baptist; yet he who is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.”

True greatness is greatness declared by Jesus Himself, and not the greatness declared by man. Let us be careful to do God’s work without vying for worldly greatness. Our mission is to lift up Jesus and to lead the people to Him and not to us. If we are to be used by God in His kingdom, we should be willing to get out of the scene to let Jesus reveal Himself to His people.

A great ministry is like that of John’s ministry that has done the purpose of God to present Jesus to a lost generation. It is not measured by length of service, nor by the number of achievements that man can acknowledge with a plaque. As always, in God’s principle, greatness is found in the bottom. He who is least in the kingdom of heaven is even greater than John the Baptist.

Those whom Jesus called “great” were those who never thought of becoming one.
