Keep Yourself From Idols of The World

1 John 5:19-21 says, "We know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.  And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ.  This is the true God, and eternal life.  Little children, keep yourselves from idols."  Amen.

This scripture talks about the wickedness of the whole world and the many things and people who can distract us from walking in an right attitude of worship.  When you don't place God first in your life, and allow someone or something else to consume your relationship with God, that is called idolatry.  If you are worshipping someone or something else, you have placed them first in your life and not your Father.  Jesus must and should always be your first priority.

Ask yourself, who and what has captured my heart?  Be honest with yourself today.  Is there anything or anyone else who gets more of your attention than Jesus?  If so, it's time to remove them or it away from being first place in your life.  Acknowledge Jesus in everything you think, say and do!

Choose What's Best

1 Corinthians 6:12 says, "Everything is permissible allowable and lawful for me; but not all things are helpful good for me to do, expedient and profitable when considered with other things.  Everything is lawful for me, but I will not become the slave of anything or be brought under its power."

Today, take time and reflect on where you are in God.  Once you have done that you're able to pray and ask God to increase that area of weakness.  Ask Him to free you from your old ways and old way of thinking.  He will replace it with something that will be helpful and fruitful.  Keep in mind that the Holy Spirit is able to guide you, teach you, and comfort you.  With His help you are able to "Choose What's Best"!

Sonship Through The Spirit

"Therefore, brethren, we are debtors not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh.  For if you live according to the flesh you will die; but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.  For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.  For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, Abba, Father.  The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs - heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together'.  (Romans 8:12-17)

You Have Been Adopted

Imagine being a witness of an adoption process.  The prospective parents saying, we'd like to adopt  Johnny, but first we want to know a few things.  Does he have a house to live in?  Does he have money for tuition?  Does he have a ride to school every morning and clothes to wear every day?  Can he prepare his own meals and mend his own clothes?  No agency would stand for such talk.  Its representative would lift her hand and say, wait a minute.  You don't understand.  You don't adopt Johnny because of what he has; you adopt him because of what he needs.  He needs a home.

The same is true with God.  He doesn't adopt us because of what we have.  He doesn't give us His name because of our wit or wallet or even good attitude....adoption is something we receive, not something we earn.  We are welcome in God's house because we have been adopted by the owner.  God has adopted you.  God sought you, found you, signed the papers and took you home.  It would be enough if God just cleansed your name, but He does more.  God adopted you simply because He wanted to.  You were in His good will and pleasure.  Knowing full well the trouble you would be and the price He would pay, He signed His name next to yours and changed your name to His and took you home.  Your Abba adopted you and became your Father.

Revealed by Death

A pastor received a call from a new father, which was not unusual.  The father, however, went on to explain that he wanted the pastor to be present when the mother came out from under the anesthetic and would be told she had given birth to a beautiful baby boy - healthy in every way - but the newborn had no ears.  When the pastor arrived, the nervous father and the doctor went into the room where the mother lay on her bed, now recovered after a hard birth.  The doctor explained that the baby had auditory openings and all the inner ear parts necessary to receive sounds but no fleshy part outside that we commonly call the ear.  The doctor assured the parents that the problem would be corrected when the child's growth was completed and a matching donor was found.

School was a touch experience for this little guy.  He was too well-aware of the stares, whispers, taunts and nicknames given to him by the other kids.  Junior High was the worst of his growing up experiences, but the young man began to adapt and learned to live with his disfigurement.  He became an excellent student and entered college on a scholarship with plans to study geology.  When he was a sophomore in college, his father phoned him and said, Son, we've finally found an ear donor for you.  Plan to come home, because the operation will take place this summer.  The operation came and went as a rousing success.  This young man was so happy as he returned to college in the fall.  His new ears were beautiful, and life took on new meaning for him.

He graduated with honors and his parents were so proud of him as he left to take a job in the Midwest.  Life was great.  Then a call came from his father who said, son, your mother has had a heart attack.  Please come right home.  The young man arrived on the next flight, only to learn his mother had died before his arrival.  The next day at the funeral home, his father walked with him to the casket where she lay and pushed back his mother's hair to show the son....his mother didn't have any tears!  She gave a part of herself to meet her son's need.

The love of God is greater even than this mother's love.  God gave us more than ears.....He gave His Son!

~John 3:16~  "For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life".
